Open Heart/Open Mind: Metaphysical Counseling for Grief Part 1 By Andrew S. Huggins, Mc.D.

What happens when we experience a loss?  A loved ones dies.., we lose a job.., a close friend moves away.., a relationship ends.., or we lose the ability to take care of ourselves.  Our whole world seems to turn upside down.  Some of the most difficult things we will ever have to face are the losses in our lives.

For many, trust is gone.  Hope is gone.  We desperately search for something to “make it all go away.”  The thought of ever being happy again seems so far out of our grasp.  In his book, “The Deeper Wound”, 2001, Deepak Chopra relates, “Suffering can be defined as the pain that makes life seem meaningless.  Animals suffer, of course, and often deeply.  Some are capable of mourning for their kind if one dies.  Humans, however, are subject to complex inner pain that includes fear, guilt, shame, grief, rage, and hopelessness.”

But this grief, this overwhelming emotional process, serves a purpose.  And luckily, grief is a universal emotion.  Everyone has experienced or will experience it at some time in their life.  To think of grief as a good thing, you need to change your point of view.  Every time you grieve, you recognize the bonds that you have created and make a conscious effort to retain what semblance still remains of those bonds, perhaps stories and memories.  You see how precious each moment you have can be.  You also recognize your humanity and compassion towards others when you see someone going through something similar.  You see that when your heart is broken, it is also wide open.

The amount of suffering you seem to inflict upon yourself is determined by what you fill that wide-open space with.  If we learn to change our perspective, though not an easy process, we can have a choice to either remain in pain and bitterness or to learn how to use the experience to grow into a more fulfilling life.

In “There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem”, 2001, Wayne W. Dyer writes, “This thing you have called suffering is really a wonderful blessing.  It teaches you to turn to God…”  The suffering we endure as humans teaches us to turn to the greater sense of being, in whatever form we choose to acknowledge it.

Metaphysical Counseling, particularly during the grieving process, can help one move past the pain by working through it and understanding where it is coming from instead of denying it’s importance in our mental and spiritual growth.

Through a study of varying beliefs that one may encounter in grief counseling, particularly bereavement, coupled with life experience, a metaphysical counselor can extend their open hearts and open minds to provide guidance and comfort to those who may need the help.  Although grief can and does surface from such things as divorce, loss of a job, etc.; it is this bereavement, or grief stemming from a death or the tragic loss of a loved one, that I am focusing on for Metaphysical Counseling.  With extensive knowledge in religious views and ongoing experience in working with the community, a metaphysical counselor will be able to help shift the perspective on grief and it’s importance in growth.
